Ryan’s life @GBG

As Security Engineering Lead, Ryan is a cybersecurity leader. We talk about standout moments in 2022, meeting new people, learning new things and living a whole life.

What do you love about life at GBG?

I don’t believe any company is perfect, but GBG’s approach to looking after team members is something I value highly. In times of extreme uncertainty, our people have frequently come first in decisions being made. Alongside the flexible work culture, this helps me enjoy a good work-life balance, try new things and take risks. I’ve benefited from working with genuinely great people. People make the place and GBG has some stars.

Tell us about you and your team

In Information Security, our focus is on ensuring the secure delivery of GBG solutions. Together, we are improving the way in which our product teams can engage with and deploy security controls to protect our data and our customers.

It’s been a busy year and I have really seen the team grow and perform outstandingly well. We have supported the secure delivery of numerous GBG solutions in the last 12 months and it’s been a pleasure to work with the great people making it happen.

Your standout moment of 2022?

I challenged myself to get out more this year. When things opened up after Covid, I wanted to meet new people, try new things and really push myself.

I founded the Peterborough chapter of OWASP, a nonprofit foundation that works to improve the security of applications and am excited to kick things off next year. I’ve attended GBG team events and cybersecurity industry events and got back into application security, getting into offensive security and penetration testing whilst passing some exams.

How has GBG helped you grow your career?

Opportunities are everywhere at GBG. I arrived at a time of significant technological change that has helped me get involved in some industry-leading projects.

We work with customers in financial services, fintech, eCommerce and many other industries that make the security decisions we take every day essential and the problems we must solve challenging. My ambition is to continue to grow high-performing teams and deliver Secure&Trusted controls that help us build trust in a digital world.

How do you find working where and when you want?

Remote working enables me to bring my best to the job while giving me the flexibility to strike a work-life balance.

My nearest office is in London and most of my team is near Chester, so it could be challenging to keep in touch, but fortunately, there’s a lot going on and it’s easy to get involved. I’ve completed a couple of GBG Challenges, attended our regular GBG team socials, and we make sure that we catch up at least once a quarter in an office.

That rhythm keeps things fresh, keeps me meeting new people from all over the business and ensures the times we do see each other in person are enjoyable and productive. I rounded the year off by attending the annual GBG football tournament, it was great catching up with team members and meeting new faces between a goal or two!
