People manager, carer and connector, Lai Fun fits a lot into a flexible life in Kuala Lumpur as she and her team deliver the next generation of fraud prevention solutions.

What’s a day in your GBG life like?

I seldom snooze my alarm! Although I’m not a morning person, I’m up quickly and ready to go. As a senior people manager in our software engineering team, I always say “I’m not a coder but a connector.” People are my work, and in the two years I have been at GBG, I have found we have the most engaged people on our team with a strong culture, so I really enjoy doing what I do every day.

I share our purpose of building trust and our vision of a digital world where everyone can transact online with confidence and do my best to inspire and facilitate the team to innovate, connecting all our talented team members and attracting new talent to achieve our common goal: the next generation in fraud prevention solutions.

Next-generation solutions?

Yes, over the past few years, innovation in digital financial services has accelerated, offering their customers greater flexibility and convenience. But fraud has increased too, with financial crime increasing at the same unprecedented pace.

We knew we needed to offer our business customers a way of handling large numbers of transactions, helping them prevent new fraud typologies and uncover suspicious money laundering networks. Our next-generation platform features cutting-edge tech and open standards to detect sophisticated patterns of fraud and money laundering supported by world-class investigation tools, dynamic segmentation, network graph analytics, and machine learning capabilities.

What’s the biggest problem facing financial services?

Unauthorised transactions have grown at an exponential rate as all digital services have boomed during and after the pandemic. Financial services now have to combat highly sophisticated financial crimes and need a comprehensive assessment of their exposure to new fraud typologies and patterns. This may lead these businesses vulnerable to new fraud typologies and patterns.

Without a proactive approach to fraud detection and management and rapidly scalable solutions, innocent people risk losing their life savings in a matter of seconds. Or mission is to partner with financial services to help them mitigate fraud risk, comply with regulatory requirements and help them deliver a great experience that their customers can trust.

What’s next for fraud prevention?

We’ll continue to do everything to protect our customers and their customers, so everyone can transact online safely with confidence.

Our next-generation platform design already deploys technology such as stream processing, complex event processing, behavioural analytics with AI/ML, graph data science and analytics. By continuing to leverage cutting-edge cloud technology and enhanced fraud capabilities, we will evolve and enhance our customers’ end-to-end view of their business transactions, helping them to make faster, seamless and accurate decisions, automatically and in real time.  

What do you like about life at GBG?

To me, I like the flexibility to work when and where I want. Whether that’s from my home (cue kids yelling), from a coffee shop, listening to acoustic music with a cup of bittersweet hot green tea, or from a hotel, enjoying my morning breakfast with a panoramic view of Kuala Lumpur city centre.

With technology, moving between the home and office and back has been relatively smooth for us. We’ve found it has been easier than ever to connect with team members anywhere, anytime, to anyone in the world. And with the flexible schedule, we are empowered to find pockets of time throughout the day to take care of family and manage work without so much stress.
